Privacy Policy
Last updated: 4 October 2026 (v1.5)
Muslimin ("the app") helps Muslims find jamat times of nearby masjids. This policy explains what we collect and why.
What we collect
- Account: name and email address, and an encrypted password if you sign up with email (or your Google sign-in), handled by Google Firebase Authentication. An account is needed to use the app.
- Followed masjids and reminder settings — stored on your phone and in your account, so they sync between devices. App preferences such as language and light/dark theme stay on your phone.
- Location — used on your device to find nearby masjids and calculate prayer times. We do not store your location history.
- Notification token — to send notices from masjids you follow.
- Masjid channels you join — your name and role in that channel, and the messages posted there. Only the channel's members can read its messages; only its admins see who has joined. Leaving the channel removes your membership.
- Volunteer editors: when you offer to update a masjid's times, the app measures your position once to check you are within 2 km of it. Your name, that position and its distance are saved with your volunteer role and shown only to the masjid's owner and the Muslimin admin. Changes you make to times, staff or maktab are recorded with your name, and your name appears on the masjid page as the last person who updated it.
- Missing masjids you add: the name, the spot you pinned and your name, seen by the Muslimin admin; once approved, the masjid is public and you become its volunteer editor.
- Problem reports: your name, the masjid, the reason and your note, seen only by the Muslimin admin.
- Masjid authorities only: phone number, NID number and role, used only to verify the masjid and never shown publicly; and the masjid's location (taken by GPS with its accuracy, or pinned on the map), which is shown on the public masjid profile and can be updated by the masjid's owner.
How we use it
Only to run the app: show masjids, send reminders and notices, sync your settings and verify masjid profiles. We do not sell your data or show ads.
When you choose a masjid location on the map, the map tiles, nearby masjids and search results come from OpenStreetMap services (tile.openstreetmap.org, Overpass API and Nominatim). They receive the map area you view, what you type in the map search and the spot you tap (to name the place there) — not your account details.
When a masjid authority scans a photo of the salat time board, the photo is first read on the phone itself (Apple Vision on iPhone, Google ML Kit on Android). It is also sent to Google's Gemini model through Firebase AI Logic to read Bangla digits and labels. The photo is used only to read the times and is not stored by Muslimin.
Most masjid profiles were added from OpenStreetMap (© OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL) and are kept up to date by volunteers who live nearby.
Your thana for the masjid list is worked out on your phone from bundled boundary data (BBS / OCHA via geoBoundaries); it is not sent anywhere. Push notifications are sent through Google Firebase Cloud Messaging by a small scheduled job on GitHub, which reads only the new notices and messages to send.
In-app directions use the OpenStreetMap routing service run by FOSSGIS (routing.openstreetmap.de), which receives your position and the masjid's to draw the way. Hold-to-talk in channels uses your phone's own speech recognition (Apple or Google); the text is sent as an ordinary message and no recording is kept by Muslimin.
Where it is stored
Data is stored in Google Firebase (Cloud Firestore, asia-south1). Access is protected by security rules: only you can read your account data; NID and phone numbers of masjid authorities are visible only to them and to Muslimin administrators.
Your choices
- Change your name or password, or reset a forgotten password, from the app.
- Delete your account any time: More → My Account → Delete Account. This removes your account and saved data.
- Turn off location or notifications in your phone settings (some features need them).
